Khelaghar is a residential institution and training center that caters to children from marginalized communities in and around West Bengal. Located in Badu, Madhyamgram, in the fringes of the metropolitan city of Kolkata, the institution offers an idyllic environment for children to discover and nurture their potentialities. Based on Tagore’s idea of Ashram learning, the environment of Khelaghar gives its residents the scope to explore and connect with nature through its various curricular and co-curricular activities. Space spans over 27 Bighas (9 Acres) and has been designed in such a way as to conform to an Ashram type living, with an expansive atmosphere for learning without boundaries, learning that goes beyond reading, writing, and mathematics.

What We Do
Create a nurturing environment to facilitate the holistic development of the resident children
Provide a relevant and contextual elementary education that promotes the all-round development of children, replete with co-curricular activities as an integral part of the curriculum
Encourage the habit of reading for pleasure through regular library and story telling sessions
Ensure that there are adequate opportunities for the development of aesthetic sensibilities through the appreciation of arts such as music, dance, painting, handicrafts, etc.
Provide opportunities for developing life skills through soft skills and vocational training
Engage residents in agricultural activities with an eye towards self-sustainability
Encourage members to appreciate a oneness with nature by sensitizing them towards the natural world and its related issues
Our Philosophy
Khelaghar recognizes the presence of an inner strength and talent in each child that needs to be properly nurtured in a favourable and safe environment. When given the right opportunities, each child can shine in her unique way. In an increasingly hostile world where privilege means everything, Khelaghar endeavours to tap this powerhouse of potential in every last mile child that makes this ashram their temporary home, and strives to help these children to find their independent footing in society. Khelaghar aims to provide a rich, stimulating and positive environment that can help these children grow, shine, prosper and thrive in the ever-changing world of today.
